Virtual Internship - Social Media for Climate Change
The American University of Central Asia is excited to announce that 40 students from Kyrgyzstan have been selected to participate in the virtual internship program: Social Media for Climate Activism. The internship will run from January 23rd - April 3rd, 2023 and will focus on the development, execution, and assessment of a social media campaign in support of The Worldwide Teach-in on Climate and Justice, a global climate education project that aims to engage half-a-million students and teachers in serious dialog about the climate crisis.
The Virtual Internship for Kyrgyz students is a unique opportunity made possible through the funding of the U.S. Embassy Bishkek and implemented by Bard College in partnership with the American University of Central Asia (AUCA).
Throughout the 10-week program, interns will gain valuable, practical experience working with students from around the world, as well as integral skills during weekly meetings where interns will learn critical social media and organizing skills. Interns will become part of a network of young climate leaders and will develop close partnerships with sustainability and education professionals in their region.
Interns are expected to commit to at least five hours of work per week, including group strategy meetings, presentations, and online discussion every Monday for 90 minutes, either from 6:00 - 7:30 AM Eastern (New York) time or 4:00-5:30 PM Eastern (New York) time. Additionally, interns are strongly encouraged to attend an online Youth Climate Summit on Saturday, February 4th, 10 AM - 1 PM Eastern (New York) time where they will meet with a global network of youth climate activists.
Social Media for Climate Activism will be offering a $150 scholarship for interns from Kyrgyzstan. Interns who complete the program will receive a certificate and can request letters of recommendation from Dr. Eban Goodstein, Director of the Bard Graduate Programs in Sustainability, which is the organization sponsoring the internship.
Trainings on "Teaching Climate" for Non-Experts
The Biggest Threat to Our Future: Assuming that someone else will lead and solve the climate crisis.
The key to a successful teach-in is relying on homegrown talent, not outside experts. The more educators you involve directly from your school or community, the more people will attend the event. Since climate touches everything, faculty and other speakers don’t need to be sustainability experts; our trainings will help anyone learn how to turn history, psychology, physics, leadership, and music into climate solutions.
Join us Wednesdays for weekly sessions that feature Professional Development mini-workshops on Teaching Climate for Non-Experts, led by Eban Goodstein, Ph.D., and David Blockstein, Ph.D. In addition to guest speakers and key tools for hosting a successful Teach-In, the sessions equip participants with the tools needed to #MakeClimateAClass and get people talking productively about climate and justice.
Each week we bring you a new guest with a specialized perspective on talking about Climate Change in the classroom and beyond. We will expand on the Teach-In resources available online, while providing key professional development trainings.
The sessions are at 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Eastern (New York), 08:00 and 21:00 (Bishkek time). All those interested in organizing a teach-in or talking about climate change with students and colleagues are welcome to join us!
